Touring Colombia with Camargo Adventure Travel

Our family had the distinct pleasure of touring Bogota and Cartagena with young Carlos Camargo in January of 1998 on the occasion of his eldest daughter's christening.

One would never guess he was just getting his feet wet in the travel-planning space at the time as his maturity and reassuring nature calmed our pre-departure nerves. Not only did he take our anxious phone calls, but he arranged to meet our family at the Miami airport to fly with us to Bogota, helped us negotiate a jetway lined with DEA officers and dogs which our daughter tried to befriend while boarding the plane, guided us through a quite chaotic customs clearance, and arranged to have his wife Ania meet us at the curb in an armored car with a driver.

Our stay in Colombia couldn't have been more pleasant. We were introduced to such culinary delights as meat in a diaper, arroz con coco and artichoke soup, and our daughter was delighted with the pantry filled with galletas which she learned to request from the staff in Spanish.

The trip included tours of the Salt Cathedral and Gold Museum and a canoe ride (and sighting of un barco sin pescador) to a beautiful beach for an al fresco lunch, relaxing in hammocks and swimming in the sea. Bogota activities included an eventful round of golf with Carlos' brother-in-law Ricky and an enjoyable afternoon spent at the Cortes' country club where his family's influence managed to keep us from being asked to leave when our daughter was spotted walking the grounds completely naked. The highlight of course was Sasa's christening which was held in a beautifully intimate chapel. Our memories of Cartagena include yachting, Carlos arranging for us to take a family photo with armed military guards and our toddler son swimming with Carlos' brother-in-law Miguel in a lovely courtyard pool.

We would highly recommend booking with Camargo Adventure Travel. We are extremely satisfied repeat customers who also enjoyed Carlos' company attacking the whitewater rapids of the middle fork of the Salmon River, braving the river monsters of the Lot in France and getting our doses of Vitamin D at the Ixtapa Club Med. (It's show time-ah!) Five stars!
